T-Shirts:Tops in Controversy
T-Shirts:Tops in Controversy
When the talk is about t-shirts, you may think comfort - not controversy. Yet during October, t-shirts were at the heart of a few heated discussions. If you think t-shirt controversy is just this month's topic, then you would be making a big mistake.
T-shirt controversy crops up on a regular basis. A Bart Simpson 'underachiever' t-shirt caused an outcry from some school officials in the nineties. Almost a decade later in October 2009, t-shirts for an university, a football team, and a president are vying for controversy of the month.
It wasn't just about the game recently at FedEx Field. A circulated story about the actions of certain security personnel at a Redskins game caused quite a stir. At least two game attendees claim that they were asked to turn their 'Dumb and Dumber' t-shirts inside out. Redskins Chief Operating Officer David Donovan suggests that it was just the actions of overzealous staff.
A Penn State t-shirt, designed to encourage school spirit, has also sparked opposition. The university t-shirt shows a vertical dark blue line with a horizontal Penn State White Out. Some believe that the design looks like a cross and they object to the religious symbol.
On October 14, a fourth grader in California, was asked by his teacher to change his Obama shirt. Last month, a Colorado student was asked to remove his 'anti-Obama' t-shirt.
In recent days, Pamela Anderson modeled the latest PETA shirt, proving once again that tops and controversy are a perfect fit.
